On our third day in Berlin we decided to visit the Pergamon museum. I must admit that I'd never heard of this place before but after Alice explained it to me I was keen to see it as well. For those of you who don't know, the Pergamon museum is actually the most visited art museum in Germany and is named after it's main exhibit, the Pergamon Altar.
The exhibits in this museum are some of the best preserved pieces I've seen and by far the best presented. As you can see from the picture, the Altar itself (35.64 metres wide and 33.4 metres deep) has been reconstructed inside the museum so you can actually imagine what it would have looked like way back in the second century BC. It's absolutely amazing!
Some of the other exhibits include:
The Ishtar Gate - yet another original piece which is perfectly preserved and again is absolutely massive, standing 14 metres high and 30 metres wide.
The Processional Way:
The Market Gate of Miletus - 17 metres high and 29 metres wide.
Mshatta Facade:
Plus various Islamic, Middle Eastern and other Antiquities:
Around 850,000 people visit this museum every year and it's easy to see why.
